In fact, there was a program on NPR just the other day about a study done showing that a likely cause of the rise in rates of asthma and other respiratory allergies in kids and adults, is that our babies are no longer coming into contact with the large and diverse number of organisms and foods that were common when we still lived off the land. For instance, in Amish communities, where they keep their domestic animals in barns only a few yards away from their homes, and where children are allowed interaction with farm animals from very early on.... asthma and respiratory allergies are virtually nonexistent. But in communities where they have the same lifestyle, but keep their domestic animals in barns that are at least a few blocks or more away from their homes, and where children are not allowed to interact with the domestic animals until they are several years old, asthma and other respiratory allergies are common.
And as for peanut allergies, recent studies have found that introducing peanuts into an infant's diet within the first 3 - 4 months, greatly lowers the risk of developing an allergy to peanuts.
So the bottom line is that it is our ignorance... our belief that we must separate ourselves from Nature and "overcome/vanquish" Nature that has been at the heart of these problems. The fact is that we are simply PART of Nature.... not "above" it, and that Nature is not hierarchical with humans at the top.
